Hey Cameron...

1972: Cameron Diaz born
Actress Cameron Diaz is born on this day in 1972 in San Diego. The daughter of a Cuban father who worked for an oil company and a mother who was part Native American, Diaz' blonde good looks and quirky comic timing made her a leading Hollywood star.
Diaz grew up in Long Beach, California. When Diaz was 16, a photographer discovered her at a party. He handed her his card and asked Diaz to have her parents call him. Before long, she was working for a top modeling agency and traveling around the world for photo shoots. She developed an interest in acting and auditioned for a part in The Mask, starring TV actor Jim Carrey. Although Diaz tried out for a small part as a reporter, she won the female lead role. The movie, released in 1994, was a smash hit. Diaz worked steadily after that, turning out hits including My Best Friend's Wedding (1997), in which she supported Julia Roberts' lead role, and There's Something About Mary (1998). For her role in Any Given Sunday (1999), she was reportedly paid $10 million, and even more for her part in Charlie's Angels (2000). Diaz's later work includes voicing the part of Princess Fiona in Shrek and Shrek 2 (2001 and 2004), Gangs of New York (2002) and In Her Shoes (2005).

1970 Jimi Hendrix opens a recording studio
The Electric Lady recording studio, conceived and built by guitar hero Jimi Hendrix, opens in New York. Hendrix, one of the most innovative guitar players of the rock era, had sought to build an advanced recording studio for years, but contracting problems delayed its opening until the summer of 1970, just a month before Hendrix died. However, the studio's high-tech 36-track recording technology attracted many musicians after Hendrix's death.

Cadillac...

1901 Cadillac is launched
The Cadillac Company, named after eighteenth century French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, founder of the city of Detroit, was established on this day. Henry Leland, a former mechanic and precision machinist, founded the company that would come to be known as the maker of America's luxury car. The Cadillac reached its height of popularity during the 1950s. The Cadillac Debutante, which debuted at the Waldorf-Astoria, was based on the play The Solid Gold Cadillac. Cadillac sales decreased during the 1970s as the American car market experienced an influx of smaller imports, but luxury car sales, Cadillac included, have rebounded in recent years.

Christian Hosoi...

The truth and reality behind Christian Hosoi’s lifestyle as skateboarding’s top pro, to his eventual drug addiction, jail time, and his lengthy personal and spiritual recovery was highlighted Thursday night with the premiere of Rising Son, The Legend Of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi. Quiksilver, a supporter of Hosoi during the roughest of times, hosted the documentary showing with long-time friends, teammates, and family in attendance. Everyone from the Muska, to Tony Hawk, to Jay Adams were interviewed in the documentary and all held nothing back, revealing real detailed accounts of the rise, fall, and present day recovery of skateboarding’s most legendary riders. After being released from jail only a couple years ago, Hosoi has recently re-launched his company Hosoi Skateboards and in-between skating, he pastors at a Huntington Beach, CA church. The documentary approaches Hosoi’s drug addiction and personal downfall with a rawness that throws every detail on the table but highlights his fight to once again become a success and a significant figure in skateboarding today. It’s definitely another quality piece of work from director Cesario Montano.—Ben Kelly

My Angels...

1981 Charlie's Angels ends
After five years, ABC airs its final episode of detective series Charlie's Angels, which had featured a bevy of crime-solving beauties instructed by a mysterious voice on a speaker phone known only as Charlie. Kate Jackson, Jaclyn Smith, and Farrah Fawcett played the original Angels. Fawcett's blown-dry, feathered hair launched a national fad, and the actress left the show after a year to pursue a career in movies. Subsequent Angels included Cheryl Ladd, Shelley Hack, and Tanya Roberts. In 2000, Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz, and Lucy Liu played the Angels in a movie version of the show.

Berlin Wall...
Berlin, 1961. Berlin Wall at Zimmerstrasse/MarkgrafenstrasseWest Berliners watching over the Wall to the East.
BERLIN WALL BUILT:
August 15, 1961
Two days after sealing off free passage between East and West Berlin with barbed wire, East German authorities begin building a wall--the Berlin Wall--to permanently close off access to the West. For the next 28 years, the heavily fortified Berlin Wall stood as the most tangible symbol of the Cold War--a literal "iron curtain" dividing Europe.
